- GREAT NIGHT WITH BROKEN WATCH AT THE HAWTHORN SUITE
We were very pleased to welcome back one of our popular "Stanway Rovers Live Acts" on Saturday evening, 23rd March. This time, back for another live gig, was the popular local band "Broken Watch". Formed at Colbayns High School, Clacton, Broken Watch performed their first live gig on 23rd September 2003. Since then they have performed over 90 gigs, mainly in Essex and Suffolk, but with some gigs further afield. They have even played at The Cavern Club, Liverpool (home of the 1960's world famous English Rock Band, The Beatles). They have performed for us several times at Stanway Rovers Football Club and, once again, they did not disappoint, as they treated us to an evening of 'Rock and Pop Classics from the 60s to 00s' with songs by bands such as The Beatles, Bryan Adams, The Police, Rolling Stones, Dire Straits, Pulp, Queen and Coldplay. - LADIES FIRST LOSE QUARTER FINAL CUP MATCH ON PENALTIES
Colchester United Women First 2 (3) Stanway Rovers Ladies First 2 (2) Heartbreak for the Rovers ladies as they exit the League Cup_ 2023 - 2024 on penalties. Stanway went 2-0 up in the first half, and carried that score into half time. The second half was a feisty affair and the Stanway keeper sustained an injury as United pulled a goal back. United pulled their second goal back and Stanway's keeper sustained another injury from a late challenge during a long "Added Time" at the end of the second half. Full time finished with the scores even at 2-2, although United won the yellow card count 4-2. Stanway Goal Scorers: Jessica Gill Louise Kaine With no additional goals during extra time, and three hours after kick off, the game went into penalties. Stanway led 1-2 on penalties after each side had taken two penalties each. Sadly that was the last Stanway scored, and United came out on top, winning 3-2 on penalties. Not the result we wanted today and losing on penalties always stings a bit more, but our ladies did us proud. You can hold your heads high rovers. Thank you to all players and coaches for their efforts and also our shirt sponsors and everyone who came along to support us. Our new Walking Football teams started the new Sunday league season last weekend sporting their new Stanway Rovers kits, sponsored by Total Car Parks Ltd and ABL Doors and Windows Ltd. Both A and B teams were in action playing three games each in the North Essex Friendly Alliance league of 10 teams covering the Colchester and Clacton areas. The A team, who won the league and cup double last season, started with three wins out of three, winning 2-0 against Brightlingsea A, 1-0 against Arlesford and 2-0 against Clacton Rhinos, putting them at the top of the league on goal difference after this first set of fixtures. The B team narrowly lost their three games, against Clacton A 0-1, Foxash 0-2 and Brightlingsea B 0-1. With players missing and due to return for the next fixtures, the team are hopeful for a quick change around in fortunes. John Biggs, Squad Manager, said: “It was a great start for the A Team with three clean sheets, some good football played and good goals.
